This study optimizes the strategic and tactical decisions of an army brigade using a cost-based objective function covering preparation and warfare expenses. In the first section, a new defense optimization model incorporates an extended Lanchestertype differential equation system. It simultaneously determines the optimal depth of defense (Depth), initial troop size (x 0), and levels of field work for attack (FWA, e.g., mining, bridging) and protection (FWP, e.g., fortifications). Attrition parameters depend on these decisions. The model solves for warfare duration (T) and surviving defenders (x T), revealing how optimal decisions shift relative to land and soldier costs. The second section analyzes detailed interactions between defending (BLUE) and attacking (RED) forces, focusing on cooperation among artillery, mechanized, and cavalry ranger battalions. A six-dimensional, controlled, discrete-time nonlinear difference equation system models resource dynamics, targeting selections, and cooperation levels. Attrition rates are nonlinear functions of time allocations across tasks, such as reconnaissance or engagement. This model charts resource evolution under varied deployment assumptions and adapts to sequential, dynamic game-theoretic scenarios between BLUE and RED. An illustrative application determines optimal cavalry time allocation based on future enemy artillery costs.
