Open access - Free access for readers, with article processing charges (APC) paid by authors or their institutions.
Open access publishing is when publications are available for free online to all, with very few restrictions on their reuse. Content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users can read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to full text articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from MedCrave or the author.
This is very beneficial for authors, readers and funders. Authors benefit from open access publishing because their work is readily accessible to researchers, and thus more likely to be cited in other works. For readers, it is beneficial because they can freely access and cite the published material without paying. Funders get to enjoy the benefits of getting the work that they are funding a larger audience, which increases the impact that the work has on the academic world.
Open access publishing makes the final version of an article freely and permanently accessible for everyone, immediately after publication. Copyright for the article is retained by the author and most of the permission barriers are removed. Open access publishing does come with a financial cost, and thus there are processing fees that are the responsibility of the author or research funders to provide.
