Opinion
When I was exploring my options for my first coop cycle, I knew I wanted a challenge and what better than the number one pediatric hospital in the country in almost every specialty! With such a presence in Boston, I knew that this internship was going to be competitive, but worth it. Boston Children’s Hospital is a leading teaching hospital in the Boston area, and it really showed during my training and orientation period. While there are many areas of the pharmacy that interns must become familiar with, from the basement and central pharmacies to the ever-busy main pharmacy up on the floors, there is always a friendly supervisor or technician there for you, serving as a mentor and teacher. Besides becoming familiar with common medication names and dosages available for those drugs, I would say I most learned how to work in a pharmacy in general. In any professional setting, one needs to be able to work with others well. In a pharmacy, however, it is really all about teamwork, using the collaborative abilities of technicians, interns, and pharmacists in order to provide outstanding patient care. I also gained a new skill in how to communicate with other professionals outside of pharmacy, including nurses and other hospital staff. Overall, while I would recommend this co-op for pharmacy students of all years, Boston Children’s Hospital is a great starting place for your pharmacy career and would be an excellent first co-op in order to learn and transition from typical high school jobs into the professional world of pharmacy.
