The need to mitigate and adapt to the continuous increase in global warming and ozone layer depletion due to the release of these harmful gases requires meticulous study and serious consideration. Consequently, attention is now given to renewable energy sources (RES) such as wind and solar for electricity generation in order to annul or drastically reduce the impact of these emissions on the globe. Regrettably, renewable energy source doesn’t completely rescind CO2 emission as the processes involved in making them green energy solution providers required large amount of CO2 emission and there will be need to settle the “carbon debt” before that RES becomes part of the solution, rather than part of the problem. Accordingly, it is necessary for any amount of energy demand to have a best mix for not only efficient or uninterrupted power output but also to have minimal carbon footprint. Therefore, this work presents a written methodology and an easy-to-use software for designing energy mix system with least carbon footprint for households’ load demand in Nigeria. For the purpose of data security, multiple user access, data storage, ease of access and manipulation, Structured Querying Language (SQL) for data management was adopted for the software design. SQLite Software was used to implement the models because it is extremely light, fast with a storage capacity of up to 400 Terabytes. The methodology and the developed software have the capability to compute the power and energy demand of a typical household, and the user can select the possible household appliances (load demand) from the software’s database. Based on the selected load demand, energy sources (grid, generator and renewable energy systems at different mix ratio), solar and wind energy potentials of location of usage; the software computes the capacities of the renewable energy sources, carbon footprint and carbon debt payback time for the energy mix systems. The software computed results were compared with the calculated results via mathematical models presented in the written methodology of the mix energy systems, hence the validation of the software’s output. It is envisaged that this novel work and the software will serve as an awesome solution that will benefit the world in the area of adapting to climate change and also as a yardstick for subsequent related design.
