Abstract

This study presents an analytical method for characterizing naturally fractured, fractal reservoirs as single-porosity systems using the Tiab Direct Synthesis (TDS) technique. By examining specific patterns in log–log plots of pressure and pressure derivative, such as convexity minima, slope changes, and spherical-flow behavior, direct correlations were developed to estimate the fractal dimensions ( , ) and fracture connectivity indices ( , ). Synthetic pressure transient responses were created by varying key parameters of a fractal reservoir model, illustrating how geometrical and connectivity properties affect flow regimes. Normalization procedures were used to unify unique derivative behaviors, enabling the derivation of explicit analytical formulas for parameter estimation without relying on type-curve matching. The correlations proposed were validated with synthetic examples, showing good agreement with model inputs and confirming the method's robustness. These findings indicate that the TDS technique, when adapted for fractal reservoirs, offers a quick and reliable tool for pressure-test interpretation in heterogeneous systems.
