Abstract

Microorganisms play essential role in the degradation processes of wastewater depending on the physical, chemical and characteristics of the indigenous microorganisms present in the wastewater. This study evaluated the changes in in-situ water quality characteristics of cassava wastewater due to the activities of indigenous microorganism. Replicate samples of cassava wastewater were obtained from a smallholder cassava processor in Ndemili, Delta state, Nigeria. The effluents were analyzed for in-situ characteristics at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 days. The results ranged from 3.93-6.47 pH, 1.93–2.70mg/l dissolved oxygen, 10.73-14.17 conductivity, 7.18-9.71g/l total dissolved solid, 28.10–28.63ºC temperature, 870.33-1304.33NTU. There was significant variations (p<0.05) among the various days of exposure. pH tend toward alkalinity, conductivity, total dissolved solid, dissolved oxygen were in a decline trend as exposure period increases unlike turbidity that elevated as exposure time increased. Temperature fluctuates between the various days. This study revealed that there are changes in in-situ characteristics of wastewater as exposure period increased. This is mostly like due to the activities of indigenous microorganisms found in the effluents. This indicates that even without treatment the in-situ characteristics of the wastewater in being enhanced toward limit of effluent to be discharged into the ecosystem.
